out around 4:00 a.m. this morning. jennifer franciotti is live on the scene with the latest. >> the fire is now out and no one was hurt. it was on hillsdale, about half a block north of liberty heights. liberty heights is now shut down in both directions. kevin is here from the baltimore city fire department. nobody was hurt in this fire. >> it is a very good thing. we never look forward to a fire breaking out in someone's home. we hope to have an escape plan in place. >> this was a home but it was a vacant dwelling. nobody was inside at the time. there was a nursing home next door. >> because of the intensity of the fire, the intensity -- the intense heat and heavy smoke billowed over to an adjacent nursing home occupied with about four patients. they were quickly evacuated and taken to another facility. there was damage because of the heat at a nearby home. there was one occupant there and we were able to get them out. >> because of the fire still under investigation? >> correct. no firefighters were civilians suffered any injuries. >> it looks like liberty heights is begi

's started at and jennifer franciotti is live on the scene. >> this is on falls road. i want to give you a good picture of where this is. as you take falls road considered north parkway. this housal caught fire and inside were six people. including christine. christine when did you first notice something was wrong? >> we got woken up about 1:00 a.m. and by that time one room was already engulfed in flames and it traveled into the hallway in a matter of seconds and the room my girlfriends and i were in burst into flames and we had to kick out the window. luckily we had to jump out the roof. my mother-in-law had to jump from the at i can. i know she was sent to the hospital with minor injuries. dylan and his grandfather got out on the steps and pretty much it was just us that had to joump out the roof. >> what is that like to have to jump off a roof? >> i couldn't believe i did that because in that moment, at that moment two had already jumped off and i could feel the roof panels burning up and the fire hurt. it burned so it was get burned or jump. >> dylan, you said you could hear the gla

. that ends her 15-year run. let's go live to jennifer franciotti with the latest. >> the race has not been officially called, but with 290 precincts in, gregg bernstein leads the race by 1421 votes. this is for the democratic primary. patricia jessamy supporters were feeling pretty good tuesday night. they were keeping a positive attitude about the race. she showed up to thank everyone and said she was feeling confident about the race. the bernstein campaign was cautiously optimistic about tuesday's results. poll workers spent the day at the precinct. they took the day off to support bernstein. bernstein talked a little about why he thinks he was able to make such headway. >> it came to the level of frustration people were feeling about living in one of america's most dangerous cities. i do not know if it is a question of what patricia jessamy did or did not do. >> it is important to note these numbers are unofficial. the bernstein campaign has 49% of the vote while the jessamy campaign has 47% of the vote. reporting live, jennifer franciotti, wbal-tv 11 news. >> the voting tally for execu

long. >> jennifer franciotti joins us live from fells point with the latest. we can hear the rain. >> i think god was on cue there. the rain got even heavier, which is ironic. just within the last 15 minutes. this is not the worst. the worst is yet to come. we are about ready to see a city crew come by. they are monitoring the situation in fells point. this is one area that is prone to flooding. on wednesday, this storm was being tracked. work crews in baltimore city yed to clear the storm drains. annapolis is well aware of the flood prone zone. they started sandbagging downtown. b.g.e. took a proactive approach to the storm. they have extra crews on standby in anticipation of power outages. >> the concern is the high wind. that can bring down the trees. with be heavy canopy today, we have some ground that is soaked from the recent storms. >> make sure you are prepared. have a battery-powered radio on standby and a corded phone would be handy to have. if you do have a generator, remember not to operate it inside your garage. in terms of storm drains, make sure you do not block one. if y

30s and jessamy by about 1300 votes. jennifer franciotti joins us live with more. we thought this was all over. >> we sure did. this is a prime example of how every vote counts. neither camp is willing to can see until all of the absentee ballots have been counted. it still took the board of elections nearly a full day to release complete returns. the race between bernstein and jessamy is too close to call. 3% has been lost in limbo. they forgot to turn and memory cards from 82 voting machines. those cards have been tracked down. there is nothing suspicious or unusual about the slope accounting. >> when you have an election, it is not uncommon to be at 100% within 24 hours. >> now here it is two days after the race and there is concern about the absentee ballots. the counting will begin this morning. we could have the results by this evening. who knows? i could be here tomorrow morning. jennifer franciotti, wbal-tv 11 news. >> the big fight in washington is about politics. >> the president wants to cut taxes for the middle class. withamara jordan's us live more details -- kat

. jennifer franciotti is live outside johns hopkins with details. what is the latest? >> the gunman has been identified as paul pardus from virginia. he got upset after receiving some medical information about his mother. he pulled out a gun and shot a doctor. that doctor has been identified as dr. david cohen. after the shooting, security called police who responded with a variety of other agencies. they prodded swat teams. pardus was barricaded inside the room with his mother who was confined to a hospital bed. at one point, parts of the hospital were evacuated. police learned something had happened inside the room. they went in to find pardus dead from single gunshot wounds to the head. >> at this point, we're treating this case as a murder suicide. >> as far as dr. cohen is concerned, he suffered a gunshot wound and spent much of the day in surgery. we do not have an update on his condition. we were told his condition is survivable. a lot of people are asking, how could a government get into a hospital with a gun? we will have more answers to that ansquestion coming out. jennifer francio

and north kerry street lasted for much of the evening wednesday. 11 news reporter jennifer franciotti joins us live from the devastating scene this morning with the very latest. good morning, jen. >> good morning. fire investigators are still looking for a cause, and meanwhile, the red cross is insisting at least 12 people who have been displaced by this fire. this fire did happen on wednesday afternoon. firefighters battled two four-alarm fires on split streets within blocks of one another. the first started on north calhoun street, and it's believed, at least preliminary nearly, that employers from the fire ignited the fire that happened on north kerry street. in all, 11 rowhouses burned, most were vacant. but at this point, we're told that the red cross is assisting six families. >> we need money for clothes, food, i think some diapers. one of the families needed diapers. you know, we got them a hotel. >> there is really not much left at this rowhouse, this section of rowhouses. you can see the huge, gaping hole behind me. as i stand here on the side, it is littered with debris and broke

. reporting live, jennifer franciotti. >> police are also busy investigating a pair of unrelated shootings in glen bernie. one man was shot tuesday morning and was taken to shock trauma. no word on a suspect or a possible motive. police also responded to a double shooting where authorities say two men apparently shot each other. there were also treated at shock trauma. baltimore city has recorded its 144th homicide of the year. this happened yesterday morning on harris avenue. police say the victim tried to fight of his attackers. he was shot in the chest and back. he was rushed to the pop hospital where he later died. this time last year there were 147 murders in baltimore city. ayne black has been arrested in the death of ankush gupta. the body was discovered just off of light street. police have not said how gupta ended up in the water. >> it is time to turn the page on iraq. >> the president said it was time to shift resources to prairies' here at home. kate amara has more on that. >> robert gates is in iraq this morning, meeting with troops. the president declared the war in iraq is o

and the entire trial could take up to five weeks. jennifer franciotti joins us live with the latest. >> good morning. jury selection is proving difficult for a number of factors. nearly half the jury polled said five weeks would be an undue hardship. other people said they were a victim of a crime or they knew somebody who was a victim of a crime. jury selection itself is expected to take about five days. charles mcganey, gary collins, and jerome williams are all on trial, charged with murder in the shooting death of former baltimore city councilman ken harris. its stock by a lounge to use the restroom. he was ambushed as he tried to flee the scene. d need was collected from several items at the crime scene. it will be hard to find an impartial panel. >> i think it will be very difficult. take into consideration the media exposure this case already has. people have heard so much about this that they will be excluded because they have formed an opinion. >> the trial is expected to take five weeks to compete -- to complete. 50 witnesses are expected to be called, including the woman who said s

fire within two city blocks. >> 11 news reporter jennifer franciotti live in our newsroom with more details. >> good morning. firefighters were very busy fighting fires to 11 houses on two niche blocks. all but two were m vacant. the fire started on the 1,300 bawk of minority calhoun street. five rowhouses went up in flames, then three more caught flames on the other side. on the 1,300 block of north cary, two of the homes were occupied when the fires broke out, but everyone got out safely. no word on what caused the first fire. >> one consideration is there may have been embers that blew from one fire croits the street to the next. may have ignited that one. >> in all more than 100 firefighters from nearly 50 companies responded. one firefighter suffered minor injuries. he is expected to be ok. >> new this morning, police in baltimore coun investigate an overnight stabbing. after an argument with several other people on the 1,000 block of ricers town road the victim was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. three arrests have been made. >> police continue to investigate a ho
